Key Points

The entire East Wing of the White House will be knocked down for President Donald Trump’s ballroom project, a senior administration official told The New York Times.
YouTube parent Alphabet will contribute $22 million to the construction of a new ballroom in the East Wing of the White House.
The payment comes from a legal settlement with President Donald Trump last month.

The White House will demolish the entire East Wing to make room for the new ballroom that is being built at the behest of President Donald Trump, a senior administration official told The New York Times on Wednesday.

The demolition work should be completed by this weekend, the official told the Times.

Images showing the demolition of part of the East Wing triggered public anger this week. The demolition work has raised questions about who is footing the bill for the planned $250 million, 90,000-square-foot building.

Tech giant Alphabet is contributing $22 million to help build the White House ballroom under a legal settlement reached with Trump last month over his being banned from the company’s YouTube platform after the Jan. 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol riot by his supporters........................

I don’t understand why Trump wrecking the White House isn’t a bigger story. I’ve been in the East Wing many times. Built by Teddy Roosevelt, expanded by FDR, it served a critical function for official gatherings like Medal of Honor award ceremonies and as an emergency ops center.

Trump refugee plan seeks 7,000 Afrikaners — and virtually no one else

The administration’s rush to process thousands of White South Africans coincides with plans for overall admissions set as low as 7,500.

The Trump administration’s plan to overhaul the U.S. refugee resettlement process, including a drastic reduction in overall annual admissions, coincides with a concerted effort to prepare thousands of White South Africans to relocate to the United States through the system, according to documents reviewed by The Washington Post and people familiar with the matter.

If the administration succeeds, almost all people admitted to the U.S. as refugees — as many as 7,000 from a maximum potential pool of 7,500 — could be Afrikaners, a group not traditionally eligible for the program but one that President Donald Trump says has been tyrannized by South Africa’s Black majority. The remainder may be chosen because of their ability to speak English or their views on “free speech,” people familiar with the matter said, upending a system that for decades had taken in people fleeing conflict and persecution from all over the world regardless of race or language.

The State Department has set a goal of processing 2,000 Afrikaners for resettlement by the end of October and an additional 4,000 by the end of November, according to two people familiar with the matter, speaking like some others on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the administration’s objectives.

Shortly after entering office, Trump issued an executive order temporarily halting the admission of most refugees, including those already vetted by the U.S. government, pending a review. Trump made an exception for Afrikaners who he has said face racial discrimination, a characterization rejected as unmoored from reality by South African officials and some Afrikaners themselves.........................................

Farm Bankruptcies in 2025 Already Surpass Last Year's Total

Farm Bankruptcies in 2025 Already Surpass Last Year’s Total

A Troubling Trend for U.S. Agriculture

Family farmers across the United States are facing mounting financial pressure. New data reveals that farm bankruptcies in 2025 have already exceeded the total number filed in all of 2024 — and the year isn’t over yet. According to the U.S. Courts, 361 Chapter 12 bankruptcy cases were filed in the first half of this year, marking a 13% increase over the same period last year.

Chapter 12 bankruptcy is designed specifically for family farmers and fishermen, allowing them to restructure debt while continuing to operate. But the surge in filings signals that many producers are struggling to stay afloat, even with that option in place.

Dairy and Row Crop Farmers Hit Hard

The majority of farm bankruptcies in 2025 are coming from dairy farms, followed closely by row crop operations in the Midwest. Wisconsin, Minnesota, Kansas, and Indiana are seeing the highest filing rates. In the South, cotton and poultry producers are also facing increased financial distress.

Farmers cite a combination of falling commodity prices, high interest rates, rising input costs, and extreme weather events as key contributors to their economic challenges. For many, profit margins have vanished entirely.

Rural Economies at Risk

As more farms file for bankruptcy, the ripple effect is spreading through rural communities. Local equipment dealers, feed suppliers, and processors are also feeling the pinch. Experts warn that the rising number of farm bankruptcies in 2025 could lead to a long-term decline in rural economic stability and food security.

Agricultural groups are calling for greater federal support, including improved access to credit, revisions to crop insurance, and stronger disaster relief programs.........................

Story by Scarlett O'Toole • 4h •

Donald Trump won't be happy with CNN as anchor Abby Phillip ridiculed his approval ratings, suggesting the president is "deeply underwater."

Phillip clashed with political commentator Scott Jennings on Tuesday's episode of CNN's NewsNight as Jennings tried to claim Trump's approval rating has improved. However, Phillip pointed to recent polling which shows Democrats currently have an advantage.

According to the latest Gallup poll, 48% of Americans identify as Democrats, compared to 41% who consider themselves to be Republicans. Before last year's election, Republicans were ahead of Democrats. Phillip reported, "[CNN host] Harry Enten pointed this out this morning, in the first part of this year, the generic ballot – Democrats versus Republicans – was basically tied. Now, Democrats have an advantage."

Phillip continued, "They are getting, I don't wanna say more popular, that might be overstating it, but they are improving, even while there's a shutdown. So the political incentives are not working in the Republicans' favors right now."............................

A man was reported killed and children wounded in an attack on a kindergarten in Kharkiv

At least seven people have been killed including two children during intense Russian drone and missile strikes on Ukraine, officials say.

A kindergarten was hit in Ukraine's second biggest city Kharkiv and there was widespread damage in Kyiv. Children were among the 27 people wounded.

Hours earlier, US President Donald Trump said his plans for an imminent summit in Budapest with Russia's Vladimir Putin had been shelved as he did not want a "wasted meeting".

President Volodymyr Zelensky said the attacks proved Moscow had not come under enough pressure for its continued war.

The Kremlin has rejected calls for a ceasefire along the current front lines made both by Trump and European leaders.
