9. Christmas melon experience

I tried but like all melons I’ve attempted, the pests get them before me.

Even in my pool garden, which by law has to have a fence, I had a raccoon break in.

At the school gardens, which are enclosed by chain-link fence, I tell my gardeners that it’s an iffy proposition to grow a melon. That is because people actually will scale the fence and steal the melon if they see it from the street.

It’s only a certain type of person who can scale that fence. I know who it is because I’ve seen them do it.

I buy them frequently when they show up at the farmers market because I think they are the most delicious melon of all.
