The actor who played that part (I think his name is Josh Charles??) burned out. That was the reason he wanted to leave. Perhaps the show could just never rise to that same level without him, but it does have some other really great people. I think where it went wrong was just not finding the exact right person to succeed Will in Alicia's love life.
