I've been listening to it since the 70s, and it gives me the chills to this day.

It's Robert Hunter's lyrics...

Jack Straw and Shannon were on the run. Shannon was moving too slowly...

"Jack Straw from Wichita cut his buddy down...and dug for him a shallow grave and laid his body down".

Did Jack kill Shannon, or was Shannon hanged and Jack cut him down from the noose?
