TCM recently showed a bunch of "colored" shorts featuring these two guys, who deserve every accolade we can bestow, but there were another dozen or so fabulous black dancers who unfortunately never made it onto the MGM screen. Every now and then, TCM or PBS has a special giving these guys the respect and awe they deserve. Worst of all I guess is the fact that Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire et al. studied their moves and outright copied much of their work. I think the Astaire number "Mr. Bojangles," intended I'm sure as an homage, is about the most insulting thing he could have done to Bill Robinson--whom I know from interviews was a man Astaire admired above all other dancers. Late in life, Astaire was an enormous fan of Michael Jackson's dancing, for what that's worth.
