Is because they wound up homeless or similar ... but that's obviously not always the case.

But yeah, otherwise, I hate humanity and feel like beating these people up, so ... it's something of a defense mechanism to hope 'there must've been a real reason ... maybe their kid had cancer and it was either the child or the dog' type of thing.

It's incredibly dismaying

And I'd wager that cats get left behind even more often.
