For you young'uns out there, the landmark 1964 Civils Rights Act and the 1965 Voting Rights Act are the 2 reasons why the Southern Democrats left the Democratic Party. LBJ said "Let them go," and the Repukes welcomed them with (mostly) open arms. The Southern Democrats had been a reliable voting bloc since the end of the Civil War, but their racism was just more than our liberal-thinking Democratic party wanted to face anymore. We're still dealing with the repercussions even now, 60 years later.
