6. There certainly seem to be many robberies of the great museums of Paris

Of course, they are very attractive. Other European Museums have been victimized as well.

My impression is that most of the stolen art is never recovered. When it is, it often seems to be by mere chance.

Generally the thieves themselves remain unknown. When they are caught, there has often been collusion with museum staff and the penalties seem, to me, not commensurate with the crime—being, at most, only a few years in prison. One cannot help but think that The Powers That Be are often involved in the background.

The theft in Amsterdam of 20 priceless Van Gogh paintings in 1991 exemplifies much of the above. Those convicted were sentenced to four years—I don't know how long they actually served
