Louvre Museum closes after brazen theft of jewels with 'inestimable' value

Several people broke into the Louvre Museum in Paris, where they cracked open display cases and stole jewelry with "inestimable heritage and historical value," before making their getaway on motorcycles, the museum and two ministers said.

The suspects "broke open" a window and entered the museum's Apollo Gallery, which houses the French crown jewels, among other artifacts, at about 9:30 a.m. local time on Sunday, the museum said in a statement. The details of the pieces that were taken during the brazen robbery had not yet been made public.

At least three suspects appeared to have been involved, Nunez said, adding that some or all appeared to have entered the Apollo Gallery and to have taken jewels. He said they appeared to have used a construction ladder to enter the building.

The alleged robbery took about seven minutes, he said. The suspects fled on motorcycles, he said.

Of course, they are very attractive. Other European Museums have been victimized as well.

My impression is that most of the stolen art is never recovered. When it is, it often seems to be by mere chance.

Generally the thieves themselves remain unknown. When they are caught, there has often been collusion with museum staff and the penalties seem, to me, not commensurate with the crime—being, at most, only a few years in prison. One cannot help but think that The Powers That Be are often involved in the background.

The theft in Amsterdam of 20 priceless Van Gogh paintings in 1991 exemplifies much of the above. Those convicted were sentenced to four years—I don't know how long they actually served
