Maybe he was affected by the chemicals in the ground, not the air?

Behind the whole thing of course is the vague feeling that humans are polluting the world, which they are.
Pollutants in the air, the water, the food you eat - pollution even out in space and other planets.

Mixed with a decent dose of paranoia, you get the whole chemtrails story. And a few others.
