when the Republican party chose an authoritarian Strong Leader who was not committed to democracy to head their party because they realized that they could not win without him, they ended their party's legitimacy as a partner in democracy. They knew what they were doing, several top Republicans refused to support their own candidate. There was even talk of a brokered convention to choose another candidate.
If the Democratic party cannot get enough support from voters to overcome the Republicans' disenfranchisement and gerrymandering tactics then any pretense to democracy in the US will be over.
