North Carolina GOP announce plans to vote on new House map amid nationwide redistricting battle

Source: AP

Updated 6:56 PM EDT, October 13, 2025

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina Republican legislative leaders announced plans Monday to vote next week on redrawing the state’s U.S. House district map, taking up President Donald Trump’s call to secure more GOP seats nationwide and resist rival moves by Democrats.

The push to retool already right-leaning boundaries for the ninth-largest state comes amid a major party battle spanning several states to revamp district lines to partisan advantage ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

North Carolina Republicans created a map in 2023 that resulted in GOP candidates winning 10 of the state’s 14 U.S. House seats in 2024. That compared to a 7-7 seat split between Democrats and the GOP under the map used in 2022.

Now only one of the House districts –- the 1st District currently represented by Democratic Rep. Don Davis –- is considered a true swing district and could be targeted by the GOP for an 11th seat. Davis won a second term last year by less than 2 percentage points, so shifting slightly portions of the district covering more than 20 northeastern counties could help a Republican candidate in a strong GOP year. But it could weaken districts held by GOP incumbents.

The governor of NC plays no role in redistricting. He can’t veto the maps.

answer to what Texas did. After that, the only states that I have heard about redistricting have been the red states, and those with republican legislatures.

I don't know if things are going on behind the scenes, but if that is not the case, then why aren't we fighting back on this?

The GOP is more "authoritarian/top-down" with their governments whereas Democrats are more participatory.

The one other thing to note though, is that because of the GOP nature, they had ALREADY gerrymandered their states (which is partly why they went red so deeply). So trying to tweak that may end up backfiring because there is usually some blue urban/suburban areas that they can't carve up anymore and thus those blues will dilute the reds and actually create some swing districts.

You have states like CT with no (R)s at all and others like MD with 1 (R) seat and they are wondering if it would be worth it. At this point it may have to be.

The problem was that few of them had any ability to actually do something. Either they were already agressively gerrymandered in our favor or their laws/constitutions did not allow for it.

That's the only way they can stay in their positions of continuing the destruction of our society.

If other blue states other the California and I believe New York don’t get involved, then there is really no need for a Democratic Party . Voting just to lose every branch of the congress and White House means nothing…. Yeah, say “well it shows we are dedicated to the cause, etc.” still means ZERO if the causes we are fighting for never get to be enacted.Every blue state should be drawing new maps to completely eliminate any right wing shitstain running for congress. This party needs to stop being the “good guys” and start helping your constituents. Sorry Michelle Obama, but when the republicans go low, we can’t go higher, we need to go lower to match or defeat their agenda. Gavin Newsome knows, AOC knows, Jasmine Crockett knows….. so must we.

when the Republican party chose an authoritarian Strong Leader who was not committed to democracy to head their party because they realized that they could not win without him, they ended their party's legitimacy as a partner in democracy. They knew what they were doing, several top Republicans refused to support their own candidate. There was even talk of a brokered convention to choose another candidate.
If the Democratic party cannot get enough support from voters to overcome the Republicans' disenfranchisement and gerrymandering tactics then any pretense to democracy in the US will be over.
