8. Over the years, i've known far too many people who were shot

with the guns they kept for protection. They were shot by bad guys who broke in and stole them, by angry family members who know where to find them, and saddest of all, by themselves.

Someone a long time ago gave me some very sage advice after he'd taught me how to fight really dirty: "Don't get a gun. First, people are never afraid of getting shot. They're very afraid of getting cut, so if you need to carry any kind of weapon, make it a knife. Second, carrying a gun makes you over confident to the point you stop being as aware of your surroundings as you should be. Third, anyone who manages to surprise you will take that gun away from you and probably use your own gun to shoot you." I'd add that guns, like gold, are thief magnets. I've never carried a gun or had one in my home. I've never felt like I had to.
