I think I said this before, but....

Today, it would probably be modernized as this:

"A whole day's wages will normally buy you a loaf of bread. But people will stretch out their money and buy a sack of potatoes. Those who can afford it will still have their aged whiskey and caviar!"

A tale literally as old as the alphabet. Just the luxuries have changed.
