Then the Revolution happened and the Bolsheviks overthrew Kerensky's government and the elected Duma, then went after the ex-tsar just in case he had ideas (and because they seriously hated him, out of power or not)--and wiped out his family, just in case they decided to have pretensions to reclaim the throne.

For Bolsheviks and their true-believer followers, there can be but one source of authority and power, and them's it. Challengers must bend the knee or lose their heads ... Or, to play it safe, both. In no particular order.
