I used the word “enlightened” in quotations as a pun on the phrase “sunlight is the best disinfectant”, meaning the brazen expression of hatred and cruelty will be exposed to public scrutiny and rejected, ultimately leading to their undoing, not enlightenment and redemption.

The bigots won’t be changed, but their bigotry will be exposed and rejected by the nation.
