Those experts would have told him that Venezuela extracts "heavy, sour" oil; i.e. it contains a lot more of the dense, heavy hydrocarbons (so it requires much more "cracking" and processing--some of which is highly hazardous--to get the lighter fractions). Worse yet, it is full of sulfur, which causes corrosion problems and has to be refined out. Venezuelan oil--unlike the prized lighter oils from the Mideast--is challenging to process and requires purpose-built refineries.

This is probably why we're not seeing anyone from the old neocon "bomb-Iraq" movement signing on for Trump's idiotic regime-change policies in Venezuela. My guess is that Trump thinks he has found another exploitable political class:Venezuelan exiles in the US (similar to the Miami Cubans). With Donald Trump, absolutely everything is transactional.
