On the night my mother died, she was lucid for the first time in quite a while. After months of cancer treatment and, apparently lots of pain meds, she was alert and said hi to all of us standing around her bed, but she also said "Hi, Poppy" (which was what we called my grandfather).

Thing is, Poppy had died 6 weeks earlier. Nobody had told her because she'd been so out of it she wasn't really communicating. My Dad said, "Poppy's not here" and she said "Yes he is, he's right there" and pointed to the space at the foot of her bed.

The next morning I woke up, saw I was really late for school, and rushed out just in time to see men rolling a gurney towards the front door with what was obviously a covered body on it.

All these decades later I still get a bit teary thinking maybe Poppy was there to welcome her to wherever she was headed.
