If people had supported GW Bush or Mitt Romney, I would have vehemently disagreed with them, but I usually could find some other common ground. Their preferences were political, not a reflection of their morality.

But Trump? Would they vote for Stalin or Mussolini or Hitler? I know they hate Hitler references, but there are plenty of evil dictators to choose from.

Now I can look back and see these are the same people who on some level were always racist, xenophobic, misogynistic, etc. All the signs were there that someday they could knowingly vote for a monster without apology or remorse. They were just waiting for permission to openly be who they already were.
