(60,601 posts)They are as close to a one issue advocacy group as it comes. I was at a synagogue when sometime around 2006, a group I was in invited both Street and Aipac to speak to us. Aipac refused to have a joint talk.
The spokesperson from AIPAC argued that AIPAC just supported whatever the government wanted and argued that American Jews should support it because we don't live there. Several of us pointed out that we thought it patriotic and right to argue against our own government when we disagreed and it was unthinkable that we would blindly lobby our government in support of Israel, especially when they had a right wing government. The woman after about 5 minutes left in a huff, leaving the sign up sheet behind, calling us ignorant. I followed up, using the sign up sheet, with links to back many things brought up. ( My experience on DU then definitely led to that action!)
The J Street meeting was far better. They respected us and explained why their positions were better.
As to Reid, I suspect she views everything thru a prism of white privilege vs POC persecution. While that is very real and is the root of many problems, this is not what is motivating AIPAC.
