33. Sci-fi and comic books...

I cannot fully fathom all that I have learned from the sci-fi and fantasy I have read/seen through the years. Star Trek being a major part of that influence. It has always been a means to comment on the human condition outside of reality and that makes it akin to any educational reference. However, there were and still are many who refuse to even consider that this is the case. They also (usually, not always, but usually) seem to be the same ones who advocate for hatred and bigotry in the name of security and safety. They cannot comprehend that it is only their own interpretation of 'safety' that they are interested in.

(So, my own mother was one of those who always felt that the show was just some 'kiddie thing' and not worth much. Many years later, they were about to premiere Star Trek Voyager and I remember mentioned it to her in passing. She gave her usual snort of derision and said something about it being stupid. I glanced at her and said, "Well, it has earned over 6 billion dollars so far and is on track to add another billion by the end of next year, how stupid that?" She kind of stammered and walked away. 'Revenge is a dish' and all that...)
