(20,863 posts)for mankind to understand. Hopefully we won't go that route. Seems like most syfy movies and or tv shows resemble that scenario.
If anything, syfy is giving us warnings.

(6,218 posts)Yes, that's 007 himself. I saw it once many years ago, and it was a trippy experience, to say the least.

(6,218 posts)Not many, mind you.
I saw it on tv for free, but paying to see it and sitting though it must have raised the pain level considerably.

(26,961 posts)Almost 50 years later, I still cannot stand the thought of it. It was bad enough just posting that picture, but I felt I needed to warn humanity....

(4,741 posts)The film is Zardoz, a sci-fi film from 1973 or 1974. One of my school chums dragged me to see it, but I can't remember now if I were in 5th or 6th grade when that happened. I only know it had to be one of those years, because that was the only time frame when we were classmates.
I fell asleep during it--had just gotten over some illness and felt horrible, still. She was trying to cheer me up, bless her heart.

(4,126 posts)Anyway, IIRC, he was carrying it pretty much the whole time. When he fired it, he had to grab the barrel and pull back on it. Blanks didn't have enough power to cycle the gun, so it had to be done manually. (I initially typed "by hand", but it just seemed soooo wrong...)

(1,992 posts)The vast majority of sci-fi movies and stories are really just morality tale or 'what if' stories, taken to extremes and logical conclusions.
Look into some your favourite sci-fi movies and shows and you'll see a theme there...like the 2nd season of the recent remake of Battlestar Galactica being a criticism of the Iraq war that bush started and all of the same elements there...but with the robots as the invaders and believers of the 'one true god'

(26,961 posts) People who dont look or act like you arent necessarily bad. Even the Klingons have redeeming qualities.
Deflector shields arent enough; sometimes you have to negotiate.
If you dont go where no man has gone before, youll never know whats out there.
Everyone has a role in life. Do your own job, and the ship will function smoothly.
Stay away from black holes and other things that could suck you in and not let go.
Opportunities, like Romulans, have cloaking devices; if you dont keep your scanners tuned for them, theyll sneak right by you.
If you can keep your head in a crisis, youve got a fighting chance.
Even with warp drive, you cant run away from your problems; you might as well lock in phasers and face them.
End every episode with a smile.
With this galactic wisdom at heart, you will be prepared to seek out all the strange life forms and alien civilizations we encounter every day.
(I don't know who wrote this, but it's worth sharing.

(9,363 posts)I cannot fully fathom all that I have learned from the sci-fi and fantasy I have read/seen through the years. Star Trek being a major part of that influence. It has always been a means to comment on the human condition outside of reality and that makes it akin to any educational reference. However, there were and still are many who refuse to even consider that this is the case. They also (usually, not always, but usually) seem to be the same ones who advocate for hatred and bigotry in the name of security and safety. They cannot comprehend that it is only their own interpretation of 'safety' that they are interested in.
(So, my own mother was one of those who always felt that the show was just some 'kiddie thing' and not worth much. Many years later, they were about to premiere Star Trek Voyager and I remember mentioned it to her in passing. She gave her usual snort of derision and said something about it being stupid. I glanced at her and said, "Well, it has earned over 6 billion dollars so far and is on track to add another billion by the end of next year, how stupid that?" She kind of stammered and walked away. 'Revenge is a dish' and all that...)
