5. While not as confident as I'd like to be about a Biden victory, I think Republicans lose either way

Any Republican other than Trump stands a better chance of winning independent votes than Trump does.

But if Trump isn't the Republican nominee, I think a lot of Trump supporters either wouldn't bother to vote, or they'd vote for Trump as a write-in or independent candidate. Hell, Trump could fail to be the Republican nominee because he keeled over from a heart attack, and the insane Trump base would refuse to believe it, or vote for him like a win would resurrect Trump from the dead.

I think (barring the kind of horrible swings in public opinion you can never completely rule out in our system) Republicans are screwed either way.
