...realistically speaking.

Their importance in the American political system (as opposed to the judicial system) is unassailable.

Once nominated and confirmed, they can only be charged for a crime after being impeached. Even if charged, being appealed to the Supreme Court, the charged justice will win any appeal before his or her colleagues. The decision will undoubtedly be that charges can only be brought after impeachment by the House and conviction by the Senate.

Considering that conviction will need 67 Senate votes, no political party is giving up such an important position as one of their votes on the Supreme Court. Unless there is a political earthquake, I cannot envision either party reaching 67 Senators.

Practically speaking, the Supreme Court is above the law both in ethics and philosophy. This situation may end up being a fatal flaw to American Democracy.
