(2,005 posts). . . I read somewhere recently that a woman's "first blood" doesn't happen with her period; it happens when she bites her tongue.
We've been told to "keep silent" or "just sit there and look pretty" for a looong time. Older women are realizing that they don't have that much to lose, so they are speaking up. Younger women haven't internalized all those oppressive patriarchal voices and they speaking out and walking out on men who are not worthy of them and institutions that don't value their voices.
It's a beautiful, workaday, grassroots rebellion and I love it!
I don't claim to know what will happen with this election and I am an avowed rational empiricist. But I have a certain amount of faith in the young people coming up today. Are some of them flaky and shallow and addicted to their screens? Yeah. But so many of them are savvy and curious and aware that their futures are not safe in the hands of climate change deniers and politicians who are only interested in maintaining the status quo.
For their sake, much more than for mine, I hope that tomorrow's elections moves the needle toward progress. History may repeat and/or rhyme but it never really goes backwards. We can lose ground and lose certain rights, but change drags everyone forward one way or another. People with flexible minds who are willing to embrace change and work with reality are the ones who will save our species. Those who act from fear or resentment against change can only hold us back--they sure as hell can't "make us great" again.
