36. I picked apples for piece rate.

It was not that hard a job. Fresh air and all the apples you could eat. Get high and pick. Falling off the ladder was a problem. Picking produce is not a bad job. It just does not pay much. We have some of the lowest food prices in the world. Wonder why???
I have had factory jobs that were way worse than picking. How about crawling into an drying oven at the end of a printing press and doing some welding? Or being covered to your shoulders in ink and grease while replacing parts on a printing unit? Do you know what VOCs are. Ink = VOCs. How about replacing hundreds of steam traps on live steam systems in mechanical rooms that are 100 degrees. Maybe repairing the hood exhaust duct work in a chemical lab facility? I did these jobs and was paid well to do them. 35 years in union shops!
Coal mine anyone? Trash collector? So do you think being a plumber is a better job that picking? Everyone bitches about the amount plumbers charge yet no one wants to do the job!!! I can do the work but when I have a drain to clean I call a plumber and gladly pay the rate.
Here are a couple of jobs I would not do. Police officer, yea no thanks. Any service job dealing with the pubic, no way.
Any job that requires me to sit at a desk all day. I was a machine shop foreman for 5 years and that was enough I went back to the tools.
A lot of Americans do live a sheltered life and do not understand how screwed up our economy is. Walfart for years, depended on public assistance to help pay its employees. There are a lot of hard dangerous jobs out there that Americans are doing everyday.
