(7,794 posts)The desperate-for-a-headline media loves to invent Democratic internal disorder. Every time they make such an accusation stick into the minds of the voters; we get stuck a little on our way to an electoral victory. So often there is a WELL REPORTED miscommunication or "live mike" error, usually framed as a gaffe or some other derogatory term by that same headline hungry media. Democratic "spokesmen" then, predictably, rush to clarify the candidate's meaning. They fool no one but themselves if they think that's appropriate. Candidates need to OWN their unmaskable warts. It will ultimately endear them.
That's because the media openly treats Democratic candidates differently than Republicans and it's the Democrats who get stuck with the foul, every time. Despite the trash that comes out of Republicans' mouth, both-siderism digs up, misrepresents or creates something embarrassing a Democratic candidate is supposed to have said or done. That is their "nonpartisan" reporting in action.
Democrats need to support each other without reservation during the campaign season. If a reporter asks their take on what Beto said, or any other controversial language by any other Democratic candidate, they need to respond with a no-holes-barred, "it is about damned time someone calls it like it is". It is a winning strategy that doesn't waste a lot of money. Double down and dare the media to misquote. Make quoting accurately way too valuable to risk with a misquote or some lame spin. The media is what moves the undecideds every time.
