Another of Hale's logical "gems"...The existence of laws against witchcraft (the pact with the devil sort) are proof that witches exist. His judgments and writing had a significant impact on the Salem Witch Trials.
I'd say, it's not the 1950's they want to take us back to, but the 1650's.
