(59,114 posts)He used visit the former East Germany on occasion. On one visit, he met ,and fell in love with an East German woman. They applied for an exit visa for her, which was granted with remarkably (he never suspected a thing) little bureaucracy and no harassment. As soon as she was in the west, they got married. The day after the marriage, she left him. She went to work in the tech sector. Right after the Berlin Wall fell, and the socialist regime announced its dissolution and reunification with the West was announced, she committed suicide.
My wife's cousin was only useful as long as he was giving her a legitimate excuse to show up in the west. Once she was married and had a legal residence (citizenship was granted automatically to all East Germans arriving in the West), he was of no further use to the Stasi, and she was free to do what she had been sent to do, which was acquire high tech knowledge for her Stasi/KGB masters. Whether her suicide was genuine, or "assisted" was never investigated, or if so, not publicly.
