(10,599 posts)TFG was as well, and other than impeachment, nothing came of it.
I doubt anything will come of this either. The Garland motto: forgive and forget.

(10,599 posts)To the people that matter, its merely some talking points.
Nothing will come of it, and he will continue as a member of Congress, and probably win re-election.

(408 posts)I had a Sargent Major in the Marine Corps. who worked with Lee Harvey Oswald in Japan. They were working (radar survailence ) U2s flights, over Russia/Soviet Union. Somehow Oswald ended up Russia. The point being, the Russians r very good, at getting inside any government they want. He also said Oswald was the quiet type and very smart. Didn't mingle with the rest of the troops much. Kinda makes me wonder. Semper Fidelis!!

(8,453 posts)funded the GOP takeover of the NC legislature. They are out of the same church as the rest of the RW Christian Empire and believe in the golden rule above all others: "Them as have the gold make the rules".
That Cawthorn would be part of a Russian operation, as a willing stooge or RW tool is no surprise. He's always waved the neo-fascist flag and that is one of the more popular pathways used by Russian Intel to win "friends" for Vladimir and the new Russian empire.
They would not need to win his seat in NC. His district is very RW already. They more likely use his access to congressional information along with his votes on committee or on the floor. They very clearly are using him as an outlet for propaganda and an advocate in Congress. No doubt he's been receiving whatever they are passing out in the way of campaign funds or other benefits.

(149,859 posts)but there is no real information regarding his meeting with his wife-to-be-and-soon-not-to-be in any of that. Certainly none that indicates that she was a Russian operative. Instead, she was apparently a US Army Captain, who might well have been there under no pretenses at all.
Someone is jumping to conclusions, I'd guess.

(4,785 posts)At least, not that we know. The Army Captain met Cawthorn in Russia and subsequently hooked him up with his then-prospective wife in a contrived meeting in Miami.
Cawthorns now ex-wife is a fitness instructor, personal trainer and entrepreneur from Florida. She works primarily for the CrossFit Company, but claims to be studying to be a anesthesiologist assistant.
There is probably nothing there, but Id like to know a little more about this army Captain who sidelines as a right wing Yenta

(12,904 posts)He met her through a guy he met at a St. Petersburg gambling establishment. Twenty year old American in a Russian casino? The guy tricked him into meeting him at a phony CrossFit competition.
Im not saying its true, but I do think his wifes background deserves attention. She was a guest at the White House, and hes a US Congress member.

(23,271 posts)"Why would a U.S. Army officer be in a Russian casino?"
She was on vacation? She was on a layover? She was visiting relatives?
Not everything is the plot of a James Bond movie. In fact almost nothing is. Unless they want to produce some proof she has Russian handlers, it is a nothing burger.
And frankly we don't NEED her to be a Russian asset to KNOW that Cawthorn is a national security threat and a scumbag. He accomplished those things all on his own.

(59,054 posts)He used visit the former East Germany on occasion. On one visit, he met ,and fell in love with an East German woman. They applied for an exit visa for her, which was granted with remarkably (he never suspected a thing) little bureaucracy and no harassment. As soon as she was in the west, they got married. The day after the marriage, she left him. She went to work in the tech sector. Right after the Berlin Wall fell, and the socialist regime announced its dissolution and reunification with the West was announced, she committed suicide.
My wife's cousin was only useful as long as he was giving her a legitimate excuse to show up in the west. Once she was married and had a legal residence (citizenship was granted automatically to all East Germans arriving in the West), he was of no further use to the Stasi, and she was free to do what she had been sent to do, which was acquire high tech knowledge for her Stasi/KGB masters. Whether her suicide was genuine, or "assisted" was never investigated, or if so, not publicly.

(42,125 posts)Maybe that's two. Anyway, while Cuba stopped getting oil from Russia decades ago, Russians in Cuba did not return home to Russia. They left for Miami with Batista Cubans, and they still have an embassy in Cuba, which is the ugliest building on planet Earth.
Possibility #2: Trump hooked up with Russia through business dealings in Miami, so now Russians have felt even more at home in finding American assets ever since. And setting up anchor baby networks.

Cawthron's wife Cristina Bayardelle is an American fitness model, athlete, fitness instructor, personal trainer and entrepreneur from Florida.
She mainly works for the CrossFit fitness company.
Cristina has competed in six different CrossFit tournaments over the last five years, the most recent in 2020.
She is studying to be an anesthesiologist, according to an Instagram post by Madison.

(8,742 posts)There's a Army Captain in prison for 15 years who spied for Russia. Peter Dzibinski Debbins 46 pleaded guilty last year to espionage-related charge of conspiracy to gather or deliver defense information to aid a foreign government.
In court filings, Debbins said he was motivated by a combination of familial loyalty, financial opportunity and personal grievance against the U.S. Army. His mother came from the Soviet Union and, according to court documents, he described himself as a son of Russia who thought the United States needed to be cut down to size.
