(2,615 posts)When a person says, "you people," he has just said he was different. When the next next act is to create injustice, the difference is ethical. Sadly if this man either felt he could get away with this or he felt he was doing the right thing. Possibly both.
Sadly I grew up with these people. A lot of them interact well with and even respect the black people they work with. Yet they despise the black people they do not know. It is impossible to persuade them. If you show them a video of racial injustice, they start twisting it in their mind and before the video is over, they have judged the black victim more harshly than the white monster the video shows.
Some are mostly decent caring folk apart for harboring an entire section of their brain that is ready to twist the truth they see in front of them and in the end help create even more injustice. Others are worse. They delight in their hatred. Twice a week I drive by a ranch that at one time had a chair hanging from a noose tied to the arch over their fancy iron entryway to the ranch. The noose is gone, but just like the Trumpist flags that are finally coming down, a stain was left behind and as I drive by, I think, those people.
Those people are white, just like me, but just as they think they are different and look down on others, I cannot help but think I am different and look down on them. I grew up with them. Some of them were friends. I can think of a few that if the scales fell from their eyes, they would probably cry themselves to death.
