video has surfaced from a U.S. Bank in Minnesota, showing the branch wrongfully detaining Joe Morrow, a Black man, who entered the local bank to cash his paycheck after working a 12-hour shift as an "order picker" at a grocery store.
A bank manager had Morrow placed in handcuffs despite already having an account with the bank and showing his I.D. upon entry, KSTP reported.

Despite having an account with the bank and showing his ID, that simple transaction led to a call to police, threats of arrest, and Morrow being placed in handcuffs.
A bank manager told officers he suspected the check was a fake, but police body camera video shows he only called Morrow's employer for verification after the 23-year-old Black man was removed from his office.
The check was, in fact, real.

A spokesperson confirmed the branch manager who called police on Joe Morrow is still employed with U.S. Bank and that it is reviewing the situation.

(75,511 posts)And the bank said that it is reviewing the situation. IOW once their legal team goes over things he will be fired.

(74,752 posts)But, summary dismissal would likely have been legally defensible.
His actions embarrassed the company & he's an at-will employee.
Not sure why legal would need to take more than a couple hours.
Botany
(75,511 posts).... bank so badly let alone an African American should have been reason to fire him ASAP.
ProfessorGAC
(74,752 posts)Which, of course, is stupid.
Nobody is indispensable, and I'm surmising his temperament is at odds with being a superstar employee.
Should have been fired as soon as legal knew a settlement was prudent.
He embarrassed the company AND he cost them money.

(14,118 posts)U.S. Bank disputed Morrow's allegations of racial profiling but quietly agreed to a confidential settlement two weeks after 5 INVESTIGATES started asking questions about the incident.
Lawyers and advocates say Morrow's experience raises questions about implicit bias and is part of a national phenomenon that more Black Americans have been documenting in recent years with the social media hashtag "Banking while Black."

That's the way it's done for safety training in industry and workers are required to complete their training before being allowed to work.

Apparently they have very strict "Banking While Black" rules in Minnesota.
Morrow deserves restitution for the racist, inhumane treatment he was shown by USBank.

(37,113 posts)could be arrested".. or something similar is the reply from Sgt. Justin Pletcher... WOW...
SergeStorms
(19,802 posts)a solid month of sensitivity and racial profiling training. He automatically assumed Morrow was guilty.
If that's not a possibility, he needs reassignment or dismissal. Minnesota police seem to be poorly trained. This type of thing is happening much too often for this stuff to be an isolated incident.

(2,615 posts)When a person says, "you people," he has just said he was different. When the next next act is to create injustice, the difference is ethical. Sadly if this man either felt he could get away with this or he felt he was doing the right thing. Possibly both.
Sadly I grew up with these people. A lot of them interact well with and even respect the black people they work with. Yet they despise the black people they do not know. It is impossible to persuade them. If you show them a video of racial injustice, they start twisting it in their mind and before the video is over, they have judged the black victim more harshly than the white monster the video shows.
Some are mostly decent caring folk apart for harboring an entire section of their brain that is ready to twist the truth they see in front of them and in the end help create even more injustice. Others are worse. They delight in their hatred. Twice a week I drive by a ranch that at one time had a chair hanging from a noose tied to the arch over their fancy iron entryway to the ranch. The noose is gone, but just like the Trumpist flags that are finally coming down, a stain was left behind and as I drive by, I think, those people.
Those people are white, just like me, but just as they think they are different and look down on others, I cannot help but think I am different and look down on them. I grew up with them. Some of them were friends. I can think of a few that if the scales fell from their eyes, they would probably cry themselves to death.

Believe me, it doesn't stop at the Mason-Dixon line. In college, my two roomies were from the high school we all graduated from. One was from Virginia, and the other was from Massachusetts. I never heard one of them say he was treated better than the other in his home state.
