Corps IDs rifleman killed in AfghanistanStaff report

OCEANSIDE, Calif. — Military officials Thursday identified a Marine who died Tuesday during combat operations in Afghanistan.
Lance Cpl. Justin J. Swanson, 21, of Anaheim died from injuries after an improvised explosive device detonated during operations in Helmand province, 1st Marine Division officials said in a news release.
Swanson was a rifleman assigned to 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, at Camp Pendleton. The battalion is serving in Afghanistan as part of Regimental Combat Team 7, II Marine Expeditionary Brigade.
Swanson joined the Corps on July 24, 2006, and his military decorations include the Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal and Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.
“Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family,” 2nd Lt. Joshua Benson, a division spokesman, said in the release.
