Sailor gets 15 years for starving baby

A Virginia sailor who let his daughter starve to death was sentenced Monday to 15 years in prison, court records show.

Operations Specialist Seaman Corey Alan Bryant, 23, was convicted in July in Norfolk Circuit Court on charges of second-degree murder and child neglect. He was assigned to the cruiser Monterey.

His daughter, 10-month-old Miracle Grace Bryant, died April 8, 2008, of severe malnutrition. Her twin sister was hospitalized but has since recovered.

The children’s mother, Ship’s Serviceman Seaman Heaven Kristina Smith, 22, has also pleaded guilty to second-degree murder but has not been sentenced, court records show. She was assigned to Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek, Navy records show.
