MEDFORD, Ore. — The mother of a soldier injured in Iraq this week says special protective sunglasses saved her son’s right eye.
Spc. Kevin Gallo was serving as a gunner in the turret of an armored vehicle when it was struck by a truck, causing him to hit his head.
Laurie Gallo says her 27-year-old son broke a bone behind the eye. She believes he would have lost the eye without the Wiley X protective sunglasses given to soldiers from the Oregon National Guard’s 1st Battalion, 186th Infantry, headquartered in Ashland.
Medford resident Debbie Hicks raised about $1,600 this spring to buy 68 pairs at a reduced price for the soldiers. After learning of her effort, Wiley X Inc. donated 90 pairs of the glasses that retail for $95 each.
