I'm just a layman - I'd love to hear an opinion from someone who's studied this, or is familiar with the literature on it, but there's something I've kinda gleaned from observation, from news items, etc.:

In any given social grouping of both males and females, when all the power's concentrated not just to the men in general but to a couple of high status alphas at the top, the ones in power form harems. Sometimes it's overt, like with the fundie "mormons". Sometimes it's more implicit, like with that situation in Atlanta a few years ago where all these female high schoolers contracted weird venereal diseases.

9. Actually polygamy increases your gene stock

if you are the man, that is. So you have lots of kids with your dna with lots of different women and your dna has a much better shot at immortality than some poor shlub with just one wife. The logic there is quite simple.

In terms of species repopulation I don't quite see how polygamy is superior to other arrangements.

Polygamy is logical when you live in a society where warfare is systematically depleting the male population and making it impossible for every woman to have a husband.

That is why the Arab culture allows multiple wives (I think they have it limited to four right now). It is a holdover from the crusades and other wars where the male population was extremely depleted. The rule was (and is) that all wives must be treated equally. Nevertheless, the polygamy continues to this day.

This is the civil liberties forum. Right? And polygamy is illegal in the US, right? Like it ha been in most Western countries for 1000 years or more. And there is no group, not even the Mormons, who is seriously advocating bringing it back. So it feels a little bit like kicking someone when they're down.

But basically, I think your argument-if you can call it an argument-is ridiculous. There's no logical reason to gamble. There's no logical reason to play basketball. There's no logical reason to study ancient Greek. There's no logical reason for men to have sex with men. But it's probably OK for those things to be legal.

Heck, it's probably GOOD for those things to be legal, because there's not a lot of historical precedent that says that lawmakers just randomly going around making s**t illegal whenever they feel like it is good for society.
