Bush Admin. appoints civil liberties officer for National Intelligence
In an effort to address the uproar about its domestic spying program, the Bush Administration
has appointed Alex Joel as civil-liberties protection officer for the U.S. Office of the
Director of National Intelligence, answering to John Negroponte.

While this Wall Street Journal article, New U.S. Post Aims to Guard Public's Privacy, describes
Joel's appointment favorably, but it acknowleges that he is more of a policy advisor than
an enforcer.

Credit to Slashdot for the find.

2. Of course it's a joke.
He's being appointed as a political token. It's a PR move, and not even a subtle one.

3. I can see it now
They hand him a tape of two little old ladies talking about apple pie recipes, and he'll decide they're terrorists talking in code. Nothing these scumbags do is ever on the straight and narrow; they're the classic pack of wolves with a captive sheep voting fairly for what's for dinner.
