Bush passes bill to put you in prison for "annoying" someone on internet
Gee, wonder if he's after DU???

January 9, 2006

Annoying someone via the Internet is now a federal crime.

It's no joke. Last Thursday, President Bush signed into law a prohibition on posting annoying Web messages or sending annoying e-mail messages without disclosing your true identity.

In other words, it's OK to flame someone on a mailing list or in a blog as long as you do it under your real name. Thank Congress for small favors, I guess.

This ridiculous prohibition, which would likely imperil much of Usenet, is buried in the so-called Violence Against Women and Department of Justice Reauthorization Act. Criminal penalties include stiff fines and two years in prison.

2. Everybody using the server I use will be headed for jail.
Seems like a whole lotta email addresses here have been cloned and used for return addresses on a shit load of spam. So how is THAT gonna convict all of us using our local co-op phone service as internet provider?

AND are there some kick ass hacking programs bushco could have geeks use to commandeer computers of bloggers & posters who are damaging the junta by getting the truth out? Hack, send, discover arrest & convict? Maybe the neocons have finally got a handle on the InternetS. ;)

9. I'm sure he only signed the bill to protect us from terrorism.
After all, they hate us for our freedoms, right? If the government takes away all of our freedoms they won't hate us. Makes perfect sense to me.

10. Everone who posts in GD is doomed.
We're all going to jail.

Until the ACLU picks this up and shuts down this absurd bit of nonsense.
