Celebrate Hot Tea Month by Embracing A Cup of Real Tea

Tea is well known as a source of health-enhancing antioxidants. But not everything we call tea is actually real tea – and only real tea offers antioxidants. A nutrition expert explains which teas have health benefits in this Hot Tea Month.

Bellingham, WA (Vocus) December 29, 2010

With its cold, dark days and early nights, January, the Hot Tea Month, is a perfect month to celebrate hot tea. The comforting feeling of a cup of hot tea can't be disputed – but did you know that your hot cup of tea is packed with health benefits, too?

1. Every month is Hot Tea Month for me.
I even drank hot tea in the summer in South Carolina...when I was living in a house without air conditioning!

3. Hot beverages in the South just don't seem the same.
Chocolate, tea, coffee... Ice it, or give me a soda. I get all the health benefits I need from french fries.

8. I didn't either
It was only coincidence that just today I found an online supplier for imported artichoke tea (actually, an herbal tea, or tisane). For now, I'll celebrate with some green tea.

10. My Christmas Gift to me (with all the online discounts & free shipping)
from my favorite tea company The Teaspot (http://theteaspot.com/), was their 12-tin variety set of teas in a custom tea rack. The Teaspot is located in Boulder, Colorado and fantastic. No, I have no financial interest in, it, unfortunately--especially since Oprah has now clued into it--LOL, I don't mind giving them a bit of advertising, though... I want to keep them in business.

I love my lattes still, but I'm hooked. I never use sugar and since I also drink it iced, I never feel the need for soft drinks. And, THAT is a very good thing, as Martha would say...;)

My favorites for both hot and iced tea:

Meditative Mind Our best seller! This blend of pure Chinese white tea, rosebuds and jasmine pearls creates an experience of aromatherapy that sharpens the mind and arouses the senses. The floral, exotic scent of night–blooming Jasmine is uplifting and soothing, and is used as an anti-depressant in herbal medicine. Rosebuds are used to ease nervous tension and stress, and have a calming effect on the mind. This combination works together to enhance the light, subtle flavor of the white tea leaves. This tea brews into a golden liquor with a very soothing fragrance, and is perfect before, during, or after a stressful day.

Iron Goddess Oolong This legendary oolong is a cup of pure romance. It produces a beautiful jade colored infusion. The flavor has a natural sweetness, with lingering notes of Spring greens. The Iron Goddess is a Tie Guan Yin oolong from Fujian Province, China. Hand harvested and produced through a traditional process whereby the large tea leaves are very tightly rolled. This is the one of the most revered Chinese oolongs.

Mango Tango is a fresh take on the classic tradition of flavored black teas. This blend of crisp Ceylon and fresh passion fruit and mango creates a light and fruity combination that is great any time of year. It brews into a deep, reddish liquor with a heady, bright aroma that lends itself to versatility; a steamy pot will warm you up when it's cold out while an iced cup will keep you cool on hot summer days.

A single jasmine flower is included in each mini green pu'erh tea brick. Subtle jasmine notes float on top of an earthy green pu'erh base. Steeps 3-4 times. Begin with a 1-minute steeping using near boiling water, increasing each subsequent steeping by 30s.

18. Oh dear....
I've been drinking hot tea by the ton for the last month, don't know why, but I'm enjoying my teapots and teas from Stash Tea (www.stashtea.com), but I'm afraid I may have to treat myself to something from the TeaSpot. Those teas look amazing, and I really want one of those infuser mugs, they're beautiful. Thanks for that link!

I'm learning that there's nothing as perfect as a good spot of tea.

11. Oh, yes for all you tea fans... looking for a multi-temp setting kettle
Because we all probably know by now that correct temperature is everything with these fine teas, I got really tired of boiling and then sitting there with a thermometer until the water had cooled to the right temp. Those multi-temp setting tea kettles used to be really hard to find, but I noticed that Cuisinart had a variable temp model out and Bed Bath & Beyond now carries it. It even keeps it at the right temp for 30 min or so.

(Don't forget your BB&B 20% off coupon--lol)

17. So far today, I've been outside in the snow with a cup of iced coffee, outside in the snow with
a cold beer, outside in the snow with a refreshing orange juice, and outside in the snow with a glass of ice water, but since you say I must have some hot tea, I shall have some hot tea

Unfortunately, I am all out of green tea! so I'm preparing a steaming mug of black tea laced with peppermint. And it's ready!

I drank it outside, in the dusk, listening to the birds settle for the night

I bet it would have been fantastic iced
