McCain bill threatens access to vitamins and supplements under the guise of Consumer Protection
Edited on Wed Nov-17-10 04:10 PM by no_hypocrisy
Codex is attached to the Food Safety Modernization Act which is to monitor commercial food production like the outbreak of salmonella in the eggs earlier this year.

Codex Alimentarius represents the single largest threat to our health and freedom. We are talking about control of our food supply and the banning of vitamins herbal supplements. Organic seeds will be considered contaminants and you will be fed the GMO crap that has no nutrients. If the food supply becomes this controlled, it will matter more than money.

It would criminalize seed saving (http://foodfreedom.wordpress.com/20…), turning backyard gardeners who save heirloom seeds into common criminals. This is obviously designed to give corporations like Monsanto a monopoly over seeds.

Vote by the Senate has bipartison support.

5. How exactly would this bill restrict access to vitamins and supplements?
The links you provided just state it without explanation.

7. Thanks.
Regulation is a good thing. Without it there's no way to ensure that the listed ingredients actually reflect what's inside, no way to prevent unsubstantiated claims, and no way to ensure that a product is actually safe. Remember Miracle Mineral Supplement? They don't just claim that their product cures AIDS, hep A, B, and C, malaria, herpes, TB, cancer, MS, asthma, and other diseases, but when taken as directed, it produces industrial-strength bleach. Miracle Mineral Supplement: Cure AIDS, hepatitis, and cancer by drinking bleach!

Regulation would have prevented this.

10. No, thank YOU.
I did a little more research and have amended this OP in a new post.

The situation is not dire at all as the text of the Bill does not mention Codex at all and I found it was removed earlier this year.

There's a lot of conflicting information out there, so I hope I got it "right" this time . . . .

8. Local Food Advocates Target Food Safety Bill
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=131377762

I might be a bit concerned about how the bill might affect small farmers, and local agriculture.

On the other hand, the bill doesn't appear to address supplements, though it's high time that supplements were regulated with actual consumer safety (including that of their pocket books) in mind.

9. Ya know, after reading all the links, this sounds very much like
a typical conspiracy theory thing, with some people stretching the bill to mean things it doesn't mean. I think I'll hold off waving my hands around for a bit.

11. Here's what Snopes.com has to say about the
Food Safety Modernization Act

http://www.snopes.com/politics/business/organic.asp

Please read. Most of the stuff in this conspiracy theory nonsense is just that: nonsense. Things are bent until they're tied in a pretzel-like know to serve some purpose or other. My suspicions were correct, though. It's conspiracy theory woo.

Note: This is a long Snopes entry, so it takes a bit of time to read. I will not summarize it, since it's just too darned complicated.
