33 Percent of Nose Job Patients Have Body Dysmorphic Symptoms |
|
http://abcnews.go.com/Health/33-percent-nose-job-patients-obsessed-physical-defects/story?id=14162544"Most people looking to get a nose job, or rhinoplasty, hope for a better-looking nose, but a new study found that 33 percent of them show signs of body dysmorphic disorder, or BDD, a chronic mental illness characterized by excessive worry over appearance that interferes with daily life. The condition does not improve after plastic surgery, and oftentimes, symptoms worsen post-surgery.
The study, published in the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, surveyed more than 250 Belgian patients seeking plastic surgery to improve the appearance of their nose. Researchers found that one-third of those patients had moderate to severe symptoms of BDD.
Symptoms of BDD include extreme self-consciousness, excessive grooming, frequent examination in the mirror or avoiding mirrors all together and steering clear of social situations because of one's appearance.
"This study shows that the prevalence of BDD symptoms in a cosmetic rhinoplasty population is high and that the severity of symptoms has a clearly negative effect on daily functioning," the authors concluded.
..."------------------------ I'm a little shocked that numbers are so low, but what do I know?

1. A whole lot of marketing goes into making sure most of us exhibit those symptoms. |
|
Self consciousness and excessive grooming? Pretty much every post-pubescent woman is guilty of those, and a whole lot of money is at stake in making sure it stays that way. Men seem to be catching up too.
That said, I have to go do apply some weird goop to my face to deal with my pores.

with people who get surgery to correct accidental damage, the ravages of disease, or congenital defects. The vast majority of patients of the plastic surgeon whores really need a shrink instead.

6. I got rid of my hook nose when I was 20 |
|
Very happy with the results and not ashamed of it. Never felt a need for any more surgery in the 25 years since then.

I had always hated my nose. I had rhinoplasty when I was 42, and I love it now. I wish I'd have had the opportunity to do it when I was 20 :)

8. And two-thirds of them have ugly noses |
|
and a good reason to have their noses altered?
I've always disliked my nose. Not because I have a psychiatric syndrome but because my nose is too big and an ugly shape. I'm fine with the rest of me, but I'd have had my nose altered long ago if I could afford it and if I weren't squeamish.

9. boob jobs more so, i would assume. as an aside |
|
i was in a hotel where there was a plastic surgeons convention. i have never seen more old men with young, pretty companions in my life. some of them were clearly artificially young, but it was just striking. the docs were old and ugly.
