Purpose

Hypothesis: that lipoic acid supplements taken orally will improve control of blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes.

This study will recruit 18 people with type 2 diabetes, whose diabetes is currently managed on oral agents. Each subject will then either take placebo for 12 weeks followed by lipoic acid for 12 weeks, or lipoic acid followed by placebo.

A blood test for overall diabetes control will be taken at the start and end of each 12 week period, and the change in control will be compared for lipoic acid vs placebo.

Purpose

Chronically elevated free fatty acids impair insulin sensitivity and insulin secretion (ie lipotoxicity) by a combination of oxidative stress, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and inflammation. This study will test whether alpha-lipoic acid, which has potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, prevents or ameliorates lipotoxicity.

Purpose

Heart disease is the most common cause of death in the United States and it is commonly found in people with diabetes and high cholesterol. Inflammation is one mechanism by which diabetes and elevated cholesterol damage blood vessels. Inflammation can be increased by oxidative stress. This study will see if Alpha Lipoic acid, a potent antioxidant and over the counter product, reduces blood levels of markers of oxidative stress and inflammation when compared with placebo. Placebo is a substance that looks like the real product, but contains no active product.

5. Interesting name.... thioctic acid "Lipoic Acic" used to be sourced from potatoes, until

the legendary perceived benefits of it pushed it into the spotlight. Then Italy built a facility to produce it by the ton. I have this book, perhaps you would like it, perhaps not.

I began taking a-lipoic acid and achieving great results before this book was published. It was encouraging to finally read a book that validated my experience with lipoic acid. I highly encourage diabetics to research a-lipoic acid especially if suffering from neuropathy. This book is a great start.

So I suppose this may mean that since the study start date (Dec 2009) they still haven't managed to recruit enough subjects to do it (they wanted 18 or so). I would have no idea of the results. But since it was in Livingston, and was only for people with Type 2 diabetes, it's very unlikely anyone on DU would have been able to take part anyway.
