Anyone else have problems digesting raw onion? |
|
I never would have guessed that onion would be the root of my life-long GI problems, but a four day test proves it. I've been eating raw onion and suffering because of it for 30 freaking years.
I hate to give up my favorite vegetable, but buh-bye onions. It hurts even more because the Vidalias just arrived.
Thankfully my gut still gets along with garlic.

Sorry about onions, but learning about cause of problem surely worth SOMETHING, right?

2. Maybe experiment and see if you can find a "cure." |
|
Raw onions with active-culture yoghurt or other pro-biotics?
Maybe that Beano enzyme pill?
Or perhaps bicarbonate of soda?

6. I eat lots of yogurt, but never tried Beano. |
|
Thought it was just for beans.
Off to do some Googling.

3. Can you eat cooked onions? I know cooking onions and garlic changes their chem. qualities. |

5. Maybe you can eat less onion and be okay? |
|
My ex who is on the lactose-intolerant spectrum has learned over the years that he can eat a small amount of ice cream and be just fine.

7. I have much trouble with raw onions, but no problem once they are |

cooked. They don't have to be stewed to oblivion, just soft. We use a George Foreman grill for a quick cook - slices about 1/2" thick, pile them on the grill (don't need any oil, but I occasionally add a small sprinkle of salt) and grill until they are soft. Some bits will get a little brown. Very quick and tasty with just about anything and they still have body, so you don't completely lose the raw onion crunch.

I love cooked onions, sauteed in butter. I cook with them all the time. I am also allergic to tomatoes, anything else in the nightshade family, like bell peppers and sweet peppers and all peppers, and shellfish.

10. What did the Doc say the cause is? What family of foods is this? |
|
Because I think I might have the problem now you mention it.
I love red onions and eat them raw, and have a rough time with my digestion.
