'Sometimes we get students who come in and they're angry and Oscar goes over and calms them down, because it's very difficult to be angry with a labrador.

'It means we can work with them within the hour, rather than having to wait until the next day.

'Rather than having a punitive approach we have a restorative approach where we try to get them to acknowledge what they've done wrong.

Even a guinea pig or something like that. It's a positive focus for the students.

I really need a pet or two again. They were very therapeutic. I agree about the office, but that's more difficult in many cases. The building across the parking lot from my office has an office cat. He's usually outside, so I stop and pet him and chat lol... better than nothing.

They're Italian Greyhounds - bred for centuries as companion animals, so it's in their nature to be very attuned to their humans and really to want nothing more than cuddling, some play time and lots of attention.

who was my principle nixed that just because she could, the fat pork faced swine. You can tell we didn't get along.

My kids loved them and they were good but ava braun didn't allow it.

i used to work in a building that was dog-friendly, but my workplace now is very buttoned-up (unfortunately).

i wonder what it is about dogs that makes kids settle down. i've noticed it with my friends. it's like the kids acquire a care-taker role...or, maybe they just become more observant. at any rate, i think dogs are great for people of any age!!

Mine are giants - 16 and 19 pounds. Very athletic, but I also love the little ones too :) I've seen them as small as 5 pounds full grown.

cat people wouldn't be cat people anymore if they had lived w my cat.

I did care for her and took good care of her for 21 years (!!!!!) but she never even liked us. At all. We were just there to feed her, period. What an interesting long window into a utilitarian mind.

19. I had several animals until a parent complained

I had rabbits, guinea pigs, white rats and fish. The kids loved them. Yes, they helped keep them calm. But then a bitchy parent who decided the animals were dirty complained and I had to get rid of them.

No, they weren't dirty. The kids took care of them and the custodians never once complained. This parent was afraid her kid was going to catch rabies from the animals. She actually said that. And every teacher in the building who had animals had to get rid of them.

Still makes me mad.

22. I have taken my registered therapy dog in on the last day of school.

The kids are so busy petting the dog that they forget to misbehave! It was a really nice experience. No complaints either. Our elementary buildings also have "reading dogs" on special occasions. The kids love to read to them.

It is amazing how the most difficult children gravitate to the dog and how he responds to those who need affection the most.

29. We have a substitute who has a registered therapy dog.

Retired now, like the substitute. When she comes in to sub, she brings the dog for the day.

Somehow, she never has any discipline problems in the classrooms she subs in.

30. Hope the Lab does better than the fish

in my daughter's Science class. They were poisoned with White Out. I still can't believe it. Also had a student caught taking apart the teacher's laptop. Amazingly the student was not expelled (probably not even suspended) and was allowed to finish the course in the asst. principal's office. It is so rare that these type of vandals are caught, I would have been in favor of the individual repeating the entire course.
