why does the right think teachers will teach better if they fear for their jobs? |
|
That is after all the full extent of their desired programs. Get ride of unions so you can fire teachers arbitrarily like the rest of the labor force.

1. They don't want us to teach better |

They want us gone. So they can hire TFA and other cheap labor.

3. those in control want those that they control to always be in fear. |
|
If they are not in fear then they may rise up. I don't care if you are a teacher or a programmer or a refuse collector. The controllers want each and every one of us to be afraid. It is their idea of motivation. Not knowing if you will be fired today.

4. Public Education is one of those things that the right hates. |
|
Generally, any meme that they run under the guise of "improving" really mean destroying.
Always be wary of righties bearing "facts".

5. Management believes ALL employees work better if they fear for their jobs. |
|
Edited on Sun Nov-21-10 11:39 PM by AdHocSolver
They also believe people will work for less money if they fear for their jobs.
Companies frequently threaten to outsource jobs if workers don't take pay and benefit cuts.
This "race to the bottom" is why the U.S. economy is collapsing, and why government deficits are so staggering.
The wealthy elite are merely applying what has worked for them in the rest of the economy to education. There is a lot of money to be made in "privatizing" education.
The wealthy elite won't stop (unless they are forced to) until they have turned America into a banana republic, and there is nothing left to steal.

12. This small group seems to be. |

Since the Democratic Party, through elected Democrats, are an active part of the efforts to privatize, union-bust, and destroy public education, you'll find plenty of those who won't agree right here on DU. Just read some of the education threads in GD.

Barack Obama and Arne Duncan are "the right", uh?
Well, that description reveals a lot, since most of the so-called "tenure reform" and union bashing advocates are establishment Democrats.

8. They don't. But it's easier to demonize and punish teachers |
|
than to fix the real problems in education, i.e. inequitable income, uninvolved parents, student apathy, societal messaging, outdated scheduling, teacher workloads & support, ineffective administrations, etc.

Especially the apathetic students and uninvolved parents. Other parts are true too, but from my experience it's the fault of the student and parents who could care less.

9. Sounds more like The Right thinks teachers will teach what The Right wants students to learn. |

Less critical thinking and more reactionary political dogma like "don't ask questions from authorities".

14. It's a pattern. They did this with civil servants too. |
|
They pushed out all the good civil servants and put in people they could mow over. Today, in local government, you will find good public servants in departments that have to answer directly to the Federal government, like payroll, for instance. But in Public Works and other areas, the jobs are filled with toadies who will bend their ethics to please their masters, all for the right to earn that paycheck and pension. Selling out their souls.
In the case of public school teachers, they're doing it as a move to destroy the public school system.

The unfortunate new situation has the Democrats buying into their message. Hold on folk who care for public education, it is going to be a very bumpy ride.

19. I think most managers think that |
|
The idea is someone who knows there won't be consequences for sucking at their job won't bother.
I think it's a bad management practice, but it's not entirely mysterious. And I did suffer through several teachers who had ossified into their classrooms and just didn't care anymore. But I don't think that's the Right's issue; I think they just want to pay teachers less.
