Poll question: What would you do if your employer accidentally forgot to pay you? |
|
Our district supposedly accidentally messed up the payroll and some teachers did not get paid yesterday. Oops.
This is the third time in a year they have screwed up our payroll. They have also been forgetting to deduct union dues, health insurance premiums and other deductions. So next pay period, you pay double for these deductions.
In the meantime, the pressure is on to raise test scores and - well you know the drill. Principals are being made to work 10 hour days and most Saturdays. No time off all summer.
Accountability for the certified staff but for those who do the payroll, not so much.
They also completely screwed up the layoffs this summer. Not enough time to go into detail on that one. LOL
So if you didn't get paid, as a caring professional who works with children, what would you do?

1. Seems like there is some course of action between "nothing" and "sit-in" |
|
But I'm not the one in the trenches

7. Yeah. Well, if you've exhausted the polite channels of recourse... |
|
it's reasonable to start considering the less-polite channels.

My company made this mistake on a fellow employee friend of mine, her husband died of lung cancer, and while they were cutting him off of the medical after his death, they eliminated her benefits, too. The guy in the cube next to me noticed that they stopped taking union dues out of his paycheck.
Now, I work for an extremely bureaucratic organization, and I expect that you do, too. Frankly, when I worked in for-profit businesses, large and small, they didn't make either the number or the magnitude of the mistakes that I see with my present employer. But, that's just an anecdote, your mileage may vary.

4. I forgot to add my health insurance was canceled |
|
Still not clear on that one. I had to go in for some medical tests a few weeks ago and the doctor's office mentioned my insurance was no longer active. Don't know if my employer or the insurance company screwed up on that one.

14. Sorry that happened to you |
|
And I was sorry that my friend Doris had to deal with the cancellation of her health coverage right after she buried her husband.
Stupidity happens.

8. Contact your state's division of employment |
|
probably wage & hour division and file a complaint.
Alternately you could contact your payroll department and allude to the fact that you intend to file a complaint with the above if you do not have your check within 24 hours.
It's amazing just how fast things happen when they believe that they will be answering an official letter of complaint and possible investigation.

9. Some of my kids didn't get paid this week |
|
They work at a Taco Bell and were told only managers were getting paid this week and that their paychecks were being held for a week. Sounds like a cash flow problem to me - and I hope the place doesn't close up. Not that I like Taco Bell - I just want my students to get paid for their work.

10. That is so wrong -- the managers should have had to wait a week. I hope it comes |
|
through next week for them.

Never did figure out the insurance thing. I guess I'll find out for sure if I get sick and need medical care.

15. This should be reported to your state dept. of labor. |
|
I'd also get the teachers' union involved. Call the local news stations....they love this stuff.
One goof is can be considered "understandable". If this has happened more than once, there should be someone called in to audit the dept. There may be legal remedies, too. The Super should be held responsible for not dealing w/this individual/problem (incompetent personnel?).
This is not a business that "can't make payroll", it is a non-profit, government-funded entity....the funds are there....budgeted in previous year & passed by SB & County Commission (or city council).
Welcome to the end of public education. Call me paranoid, but this seems like another tactic to run people out of the profession, or deter them from entering it. Another RED tactic. The uneducated masses make for good slaves, who don't know enough to question if they are being taken advantage of by the ruling class.
