In cement patches freshly laid on the sidewalk today, the sweat-soaked volunteers out front of old Southwest High School could have etched the day’s message into concrete.
Something to describe what stirred some 200 people armed with shovels, wheelbarrows and paint brushes to swarm three Kansas City School District buildings.
The message would need to cover a complicated range of feelings, with a school district and its communities trying to turn a page and make amends with each other.
“We want to change the message this time,” said Tom Taylor, 46, who was out with Mark Hague, 52, doing this sun-blasted bit of masonry work in heat that felt like 100 degrees.
