(Charter) Teacher's brutal attack on boy, 13, at U.S. school posted on YouTube

A schoolteacher has been fired after she brutally attacked a 13-year-old pupil in front of a classroom full of students, according to US reports.

Shocking video footage appears to show Sheri Davis dragging, kicking and slapping sixth grader Isaiah Johnson after squaring up to him as he cowered in a corner.

The alleged beating is thought to have lasted almost a minute and was filmed on a mobile phone by another pupils before being posted on YouTube.

Officials at Jamie's House Charter School, a centre for children with disciplinary issues in Houston, Texas, are reportedly 'horrified'.

Are you under the impression that certified teachers never beat children? Is there some trick question on the certification exam that reliably catches anger management problems?

She certainly doesn't need to be in a classroom. I suspect her having a "certificate" would not have mattered one whit as to her behaviour. There are certainly plenty of "certifed" teachers who don't belong anywhere near children, either.

7. The back story I heard

was that this kid has been taunting a disabled student and this teacher finally snapped.

While I would never condone what she did, I certainly understand her frustration with a bully. And I am hoping this brings much needed attention to the ongoing bullying issue in so many of our schools.

9. A high proportion of the students are "at risk"

so teachers should be in a better-than-average position to deal with bullies. I know a number of teachers (my mother included) who have been attacked in a similar setting. So I agree... I understand there being "frustration" but it's still inexcusable.

However, I'm afraid that your hope for additional attention to bullying is unlikely to come from this incident. That part of the story will be drowned out. Anything approaching "blame the victim" would be unacceptable.

The tearful mother of a 13-year-old boy announced on Thursday that she is suing Jamie's House Charter School and a teacher there who was caught on video allegedly beating up the teen late last month.

The lawsuit, filed in Harris County, accuses Sheri Lynn Davis, 40, of assaulting Isaiah Reagins for more than a minute — kicking him, slapping his face and dragging him on the floor of a classroom. The suit also accuses the school of negligence and attempting to cover up the incident, which another student filmed with a cell phone camera.

“I thought she was playing at first until she threw the desk, and then that's when I got scared,” Isaiah said of Davis, who has worked at Jamie's House for three years.

Isaiah said he and other students were dancing and laughing at a female student before Davis entered the room. He recalled Davis telling him, “So, you want to fight a girl? Fight me.”

Davis' attorney, Chip Lewis, declined to comment.

14. Public schools cost money in taxes. The point I am making is that the tax

money gets spent on the schools (i.e., kids) while charter schools are just a way for the rich to take more of our tax money for themselves. They are no more than a scheme to rip us off. Charter school is just a pretty way of saying Corporate Profit Center.

I don't like the 10% of charter public schools that are MANAGED by for-profit organizations. Did you know that some traditional public schools are also managed by for-profit organizations? Do you rail against them, too?

The vast majority of charter schools are managed by LOCAL individuals - teachers, parents, men and women of the community - all of whom who have only ONE CONCERN - educating children whose needs are NOT being met in the system available.

Please please please do some research into this. the "people get rich" meme is such a red-herring. Are some people, yes? But I guarandamntee youthat there are thousands of more people "getting rich" off of the abuses of the traditional system.

Charter public schools are NOT some "get-rich-quick" scheme. You really do need to educate yourself about this and stop reading the overwhelmingly MINORITY exceptions to the good that Charters provide children.

Toughen up the charter laws in all states (they are not all equal). Close the bad ones, prosecute those who abuse the system (and I'm talking all schools, not just charter public schools. )

You're inForida - one of theworst states in the union for schools, period. I don't think what is going on where you are is any yardstick by which to measure what is really going on in every community in thecountry.

money that should go to public schools over to the private sector. This is not being done for the good of the general public, but rather for the wealthy. Where is it not happening exactly?
