Wisconsin May Ban Morning-After Pill
http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20050617/ap_on_he_me/contraception_ban_1

MADISON, Wis. - The Wisconsin Assembly approved a ban on the so-called morning-after pill on state college campuses, a restriction that would be the first in the nation if approved.

The vote in the lower chamber late Thursday sends the bill to the state Senate; both are controlled by Republicans. Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle said he will veto the measure if it reaches his desk.

The legislation would prohibit University of Wisconsin System health centers from advertising, prescribing or dispensing emergency contraception — drugs that can block a pregnancy in the days after sex. The state university system has 161,000 students on 26 campuses.

Republican Rep. Daniel LeMahieu introduced the bill after a health clinic serving UW-Madison students published ads in campus newspapers inviting students to call for prescriptions for the drug to use on spring break.

"Are we going to change the lifestyle of every UW student? No," LeMahieu said. "But we can tell the university that you are not going to condone it, you are not going to participate in it, and you are not going to use our tax dollars to do it."

Democrats said the bill would deny rape victims a chance to stop pregnancies and predicted it would lead to more unwanted pregnancies and surgical abortions.

1. Hmmmm... Love to see stats on funding for rape prevention programs.
:grr:

And just what is the "lifestyle" this shit-head LeMahieu is referring to? Is rape a fun and frequent thing in his social circles. What an ass.

Republicans = filth.

8. Morning after pills
If you've heard this before, I'm just continuing on my campaign to talk up my Governor, Rod Blagojevich. He said on the BBC, "I have a sneaking suspicion that there is a move afoot in this country to deny women their right to birth control. These prescriptions will be filled promptly, no excuses, no lectures." He has made it AGAINST THE LAW to deny a woman her birth control. He rushed the law through the Illinois State Legislature, meanwhile issuing an executive order which took effect immediately, until it formally went on the rule books just a few days ago.

12. Thank you
Thank you for liking my Governor. I'm sorry yours is so lousy. Who is he, if I may be so indiscreet as to ask? Governor Blagojevich is getting beat up all over the media, but I'm very fond of him. He's getting a bad rap.

3. ANd
they encourage rape as well. Women might be raped, made pregnant, and pukes let them walk. Didn't Bush appoint an anal rapist to some agency?

4. As a Wisconsin resident, let me be the first to apologize
for my idiotic state legislature. You'd be hard pressed to find a dumber bunch of hicks anywhere in the country--Kansas, Florida and Alabama no exceptions. They're particularly hostile, for whatever reason, to birth control and the UW system--so this is an emblematic bill for them. Thank God for Jim Doyle, who will veto this piece of shit so fast it'll make their heads spin.

the only good thing about Pennsylvania lately ( home of Slick Rick the giant hypocrite) is that we have a Dem governor.

7. Damn it would be sad
If Roe were overturned in PA. That's why we need a pro-choice Dem governor to counter our shithead Legislature. Now I can't just blame them. I'm from Northeast Philly, the most conservative section of the city, and I also have to blame some of our misguided residents. Anything the Catholic church says they buy and lick it up with a spoon. I'm curious as to what effect Pope Benedict XVI will have here. Hopefully he'll turn people off.

6. I'll pit my Kansan hicks against yours, any day.
I'm from Kansas, and have to go about saying, "Yes, I know. Yes, I know. I'm sorry, I'm sorry".

Our legislature in Kansas doesn't believe in public education with the frills (such as nurses, counselors, aides in the library or the classroom, proper nutrition, help for the disabled, help for the gifted, teachers specializing in the education of children who are not able to make it in a regular classroom). It goes against the Lord, somehow. They don't want evolution taught without the opposing variance. Which is what? The giant turtle under the earth? The watery tart in the lake with a scimitar? The beetle that drags the sun across the sky? I suppose it goes against the Lord, somehow.

Our legislature doesn't believe in public health. Reproductive health care is difficult to come by, even if you have insurance, and especially if you don't. If you are young, and become pregnant, you have to answer to (little) Attorney General of Kansas Phill Kline. I knew Big Phil Kline, little Phill is not up to the big guy's standards. Lil' Phill will get your records, in the name of the Lord. And also to prosecute all those folks who got the young ones pregnant. But, while he's at it, he will also get the records of those who seek an abortion in their later terms of pregnancy, families in great anguish, under enormous stress and subject to major financial costs. That is right, Kansans. We elected a legislature of nutcases, and a Board of Education just as loony.

I thought this was a progressive state. And we are overrun by whackos.

10. If you go to college...
...or work at one I would say write the student health clinic and inquire as to whether or not they dispense Plan B and other contraceptives. If not, ask why, and whether a meeting could be held with you and the decision maker in charge as to why that is, and if it could be changed. In my experience most people in public health or publicly funded medical situations are for choice, but are afriad of promoting controversial decisons in fear of their jobs or intense backlash. You can't just expect people to go out on a limb and get slaughtered.

11. Get the doctor
to give you just a month's supply of Progestin only Mini Pill. Take two or three pills a day (ask the doctor) for a couple of days and you will HAVE your Morning After Pill.

Women need to spread the word about this, especially those of us who are older women and used to take these higher dosage pills. What do they think women did before this pill came out?
