Do I pull for a team just because they somewhat arbitrarily share TV revenue with another team I like?

Hell no.

And schools in a conference should be within easy driving distance of each other, to maximize the intensity of rivalries and minimize the amount of time athletes spend away from campus (particularly in non-revenue sports where you have actual students involved).

The only reason to form a 'power' conference is to generate revenue which is galling since institutions of higher learning should be based on more important things.
